Former WWE United States Champion Ilja Dragunov has officially signed a contract with All Elite Wrestling (AEW) and is expected to make his promotional debut in the near future.
According to Dave Meltzer in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the 32-year-old performer, whose real name is Ilja Rukober, has finalized his deal with the company. The acquisition marks another significant signing for AEW President Tony Khan, who has recently added several high-profile former WWE talents to the roster.
The Road to Free Agency
Dragunov became a free agent on August 20, 2026, when his WWE contract expired. Backstage reports indicated at the time that WWE officials held strong negotiations into June and were keen on retaining his services. However, Dragunov ultimately opted to let his contract run out.
Because his departure resulted from an expired contract rather than a standard talent release, Dragunov was not subject to WWE’s customary 90-day non-compete clause. This allowed him the legal freedom to negotiate and sign with competing promotions immediately.
Industry rumors linking the performer to AEW intensified almost immediately after his free agency began. The likelihood of a deal became more apparent later in August when Tony Khan publicly praised Dragunov during media appearances, describing him as a tremendous professional wrestler.
Visa Hurdles and Debut Preparations
While terms of the agreement have been finalized, a report from Fightful Select noted that Dragunov’s transition faced minor logistical delays common for international talent. The Russian-born German wrestler had to navigate standard visa hurdles following his exit from WWE.
Despite these administrative processes, AEW has reportedly begun behind-the-scenes preparations for his arrival, including the creation of television graphics and promotional materials.
Industry analysts note that while many fans expected Dragunov to debut at the recent All In London event at Wembley Stadium, contract finalizations and visa clearances took several weeks to execute. A similar timeline occurred with recent acquisitions Kofi Kingston and Austin Creed, formerly known as The New Day in WWE, who signed with AEW under the team name The New Level.
Dragunov's Professional Wrestling Background
Dragunov initially built his reputation on the European independent circuit, most notably spending seven years with Germany's Westside Xtreme Wrestling (wXw), where he held the Unified World Wrestling Championship.
He signed with WWE in 2019, initially anchoring the NXT UK brand before moving to NXT in September 2022. During his tenure in the developmental system, he captured both the NXT United Kingdom Championship and the NXT Championship.
Dragunov was called up to WWE's main roster in April 2026, debuting on Monday Night Raw. His most prominent main-roster achievement came when he defeated Sami Zayn to win the WWE United States Championship. His reign lasted 70 days before he was defeated by Carmelo Hayes.
Dragunov’s final televised appearance for WWE took place on April 17, 2026, where he competed in the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal on SmackDown prior to WrestleMania 42.
What Follows for AEW
AEW has not officially announced the date or location for Dragunov's television debut. The promotion's upcoming schedule includes Dynamite and Collision broadcasts in Indianapolis, followed shortly by the All Out pay-per-view in Chicago. Additionally, the company is scheduled to host Grand Slam Paris next month, marking its first major event in France—a region where Dragunov wrestled extensively during his independent career.
While his addition brings a highly acclaimed in-ring style to the product, media reports have pointed out that Tony Khan faces the ongoing challenge of managing a heavily populated roster. Observers note that integrating elite talent like Dragunov will require careful booking to maximize television exposure across AEW's current weekly broadcast hours.
It remains unconfirmed whether he will retain his full ring name or debut under a modified moniker, though he retains the rights to use his legal first name, Ilja.
