Kamui's latest exorcism turns a terrifying urban legend into a bizarre victory, but Shizuka quickly discovers that every supernatural story comes with a dangerous price.
The episode 9 of Kamui He's Behind You starts with Mary-san appearing in a frightening sequence built around the classic phone-call urban legend. She identifies herself before warning her target that she is already right behind him. The threat escalates when another presence appears, leaving Mary-san confused and terrified. Instead of allowing the spirit to control the encounter, the mysterious figure confronts her directly and announces that her reign is over.
The story then shifts to the bizarre method used by Kamui to handle supernatural threats. In this world, evil spirits are associated with death, while acts connected to life are traditionally believed to frighten them. Kamui has transformed that old supernatural belief into his own unusual form of exorcism, known as the Sacred Act. His method is anything but conventional, and the episode immediately establishes that his approach to dealing with spirits is as strange as the creatures themselves.
After the exorcism, Kamui receives payment for his work at a company building where people had been disappearing. The client assumes that the problem has finally been resolved and praises Kamui as a charismatic psychic. However, the reality behind his reputation is much stranger. Shizuka Mimizuka, his assistant, knows exactly what kind of person her boss really is and struggles to explain why he is exhausted after an exorcism without revealing the embarrassing truth.
Shizuka is already used to Kamui's bizarre behavior, but she also knows that he has a habit of arriving at the last possible moment. When she questions him about it, Kamui explains that perceptive targets can escape if he acts too early. His strategy is to wait until the supernatural creature has committed itself before making his move. That explanation gives a glimpse into why his seemingly careless timing actually works.
Rather than simply ending the job, Kamui decides to treat Shizuka to something sweet. What starts as an innocent break quickly becomes another supernatural trap. While they are eating, Kamui asks Shizuka whether she knows the story of Teketeke. She does not, so he tells her about a girl who was struck by a train during winter and suffered a horrific accident. According to the legend Kamui shares, the girl's body was separated into two parts, and the missing lower half was never found.
The story becomes much more alarming when Kamui reveals the catch. Simply hearing the tale is enough to put someone in danger. He tells Shizuka that Teketeke will appear before her within three days. Shizuka immediately realizes that Kamui has deliberately exposed her to another supernatural threat. To him, however, this is simply another way of arranging the next job.
Not long afterward, Teketeke appears. The episode introduces Shizuka's unusual ability through her own memories. Since childhood, she has lived with an overwhelming fear of looking up because doing so might cause her to make eye contact with supernatural beings. Shrines, temples, and even churches failed to provide a solution to her problem, leaving her isolated and constantly watching the ground.
Everything changed when she met Kamui. Instead of helping her escape the supernatural world, he recognized that her unusual ability made her valuable. Shizuka could attract supernatural entities, while her quick reactions allowed her to flee from them. Kamui therefore recruited her as bait. It is a cruel arrangement from Shizuka's perspective, but it also gave her a purpose and changed the way she lived with her strange condition.
When Teketeke begins chasing Shizuka, her speed becomes crucial. The spirit is missing everything below the waist, yet it can pursue its prey at terrifying speed. Shizuka manages to keep moving while Kamui waits for the right opportunity. The episode explains that Teketeke's greatest weakness is its inability to stop or change direction quickly. Kamui uses that limitation to his advantage and eventually manages to pin the spirit down.
There is one major problem, though. Kamui's usual exorcism technique depends on a physical condition that does not apply to a spirit missing its lower body. Shizuka assumes that this means Kamui's standard method has finally met an opponent it cannot handle. Instead, Kamui reveals that he has another solution.
His alternative exploits the connection between different parts of the body and the strange psychological phenomenon known as phantom pain. Even when a body part is missing, a person can sometimes experience sensations that seem to come from that absent part. Kamui applies this idea to Teketeke, creating what the episode presents as a supernatural equivalent: phantom ecstasy.
The bizarre technique produces the result Kamui wants. Teketeke experiences the sensation of having the missing part of her body restored. Rather than simply destroying the spirit, Kamui gives her exactly what she has been searching for. The revelation reframes the urban legend itself: Teketeke is not merely a monster chasing victims but a tragic spirit driven by the loss of her lower half.
Once Teketeke believes she has found what she has been missing, the encounter reaches its strange conclusion. Shizuka is left stunned by what she has witnessed, while Kamui treats the entire incident as another successful exorcism. The explanation afterward makes the logic behind his method clearer. Since one version of the Teketeke legend says that the spirit wanders around searching for her lost lower half, allowing her to find it becomes the key to resolving the haunting.
For Shizuka, the encounter also carries a more personal meaning. Her work with Kamui may be bizarre, dangerous, and frequently humiliating, but she admits that life has changed since meeting him. She no longer spends every moment staring at the ground in terror. Even though Kamui's methods are questionable, his presence has given her a way to confront the supernatural beings that once controlled her entire life.
But Kamui is nowhere near finished. He suddenly brings up another urban legend involving a spirit called Kashima. Like Teketeke, Kashima is associated with missing parts of the body. Her legend involves missing hands and feet and a terrifying method of killing victims connected to those absent body parts. Shizuka quickly realizes that Kamui is once again telling her a supernatural story for a reason.
Her suspicion proves correct almost immediately. Kamui casually reveals that because she has now heard the story, Kashima will also appear before her within three days. Shizuka is furious when she realizes that the sweet treat was never really a reward. Kamui has effectively used their break to set up another supernatural encounter, once again turning his assistant into bait.
The episode ends on that absurdly dangerous setup. Shizuka has barely survived one encounter with Teketeke before Kamui gives her another urban legend to worry about. What makes the situation even more ridiculous is Kamui's attitude: he treats the threat of Kashima almost like a casual farewell gift. For Shizuka, however, it means another terrifying confrontation is already waiting for her.
Kamui He's Behind You Episode 9 leans hard into the series' bizarre supernatural comedy while giving Shizuka more emotional context than usual. The Mary-san opening establishes Kamui's unconventional exorcist persona, while the Teketeke storyline shows how cleverly he can exploit the rules surrounding an urban legend rather than simply overpowering a spirit. Shizuka's backstory also adds depth to her role as bait, revealing that her ability to attract supernatural beings has isolated her since childhood but ultimately brought her into Kamui's orbit. The episode's strangest idea is easily its solution to Teketeke's missing lower body, turning a weakness into the very clue needed to resolve her haunting. Just when Shizuka thinks the nightmare is over, Kamui introduces Kashima and gives her another supernatural problem to survive, making the ending a perfect setup for the next episode.
