A sequel to the critically acclaimed 2016 kaiju film Shin Godzilla is reportedly moving into active production. According to an industry leak published by Japanese media outlet Smart Flash, filming for the unannounced project, currently referred to as Shin Godzilla 2, is scheduled to begin this November.

The original movie, co-directed by Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi, was a massive box office hit in Japan and won seven Japan Academy Prizes, including Picture of the Year. Despite its success and a cliffhanger ending that heavily teased a continuation, Toho did not immediately greenlight a direct Shin Godzilla sequel, choosing instead to explore other iterations of the franchise, such as the Oscar-winning film Godzilla Minus One.

Reported Production Schedule and Creative Team

While Toho has not officially confirmed the project, the insider report details key structural elements already in place for the rumored Shin Godzilla sequel. Chief among these is the involvement of franchise visionary Hideaki Anno. Anno, widely known for creating Neon Genesis Evangelion, is reportedly attached to the new production "in some capacity," though his exact role as either a writer, director, or producer remains unverified.

The timeline outlined by the leak suggests that Toho is looking to capitalize on a gap in its production schedule. Principal photography on filmmaker Takashi Yamazaki's highly anticipated follow-up—tentatively titled Godzilla Minus Zero—wrapped in late 2025 ahead of its scheduled late 2026 theatrical release. If the reported November filming window is accurate, it indicates that Toho is prepared to manage multiple live-action kaiju movie news timelines concurrently.

Returning Cast and New Additions

The leaked details indicate that several core cast members from the 2016 film are expected to reprise their roles. The returning ensemble reportedly includes:

  • Hiroki Hasegawa, who portrayed Rando Yaguchi, the dedicated government bureaucrat who led the initial task force against the monster.
  • Satomi Ishihara, who played Kayoko Ann Patterson, the ambitious US Special Envoy to Japan.
  • Yutaka Takenouchi, who appeared as Hideki Akasaka, the pragmatic Aide to the Prime Minister.

In addition to the returning political and bureaucratic characters, the industry insider claims that prominent new actors are joining the project. Minami Hamabe and Tasuku Emoto are both expected to star in undisclosed roles. Notably, both Hamabe and Emoto previously collaborated with Hideaki Anno on his 2023 tokusatsu reimagining, Shin Kamen Rider. Minami Hamabe is also highly familiar to modern kaiju audiences, having starred as Noriko Oishi in Godzilla Minus One.

Toho's Evolving Godzilla Strategy

The prospect of Shin Godzilla 2 aligns with broader corporate shifts at the studio. In mid-2025, Toho International executives openly discussed the possibility of returning to the Shin continuity. In an interview with Bloomberg, Toho International President Koji Ueda noted that a follow-up to Shin Godzilla was a project under active consideration alongside the Minus One sequel and an untitled, Southeast Asia-focused venture.

Historically, Toho avoided running parallel live-action storylines to preserve the clarity of the brand. However, the studio’s current "Cool Japan" international expansion strategy aims to establish Godzilla as a multi-faceted global brand capable of supporting distinct cinematic universes simultaneously.

What Remains Unclear

Because Toho has not issued a formal press release or marketing materials, major elements of the project remain speculative. It is completely unknown how the script handles the final image of the 2016 film, which famously showed frozen, humanoid creatures emerging from the tip of Godzilla's tail. Furthermore, there is no confirmation on whether co-director Shinji Higuchi or composer Shiro Sagisu will return alongside Anno.

At the time of publication, Toho has not responded to inquiries regarding the Smart Flash leak. If production does commence this November, official casting announcements and a projected release window are expected from the studio in early 2027.
