The blockbuster franchise is officially expanding into episodic television. Peacock has given a formal green light to the first-ever live-action scripted television show set within the high-octane cinematic universe.

The corporate announcement marks a major structural shift for the property, bridging the gap between the theatrical franchise and NBCUniversal's streaming infrastructure. Produced by Universal Television, the upcoming Fast and Furious TV series is targeting a premier window in 2028.

The debut is strategically timed to coincide with the theatrical release of Fast Forever, the 11th and final core installment of the mainline film saga, which is scheduled to hit theaters on March 17, 2028.

Creative Team and Showrunners Assembled

The creative development of the series will be led by veterans of serialized television drama. Mike Daniels, whose previous writing and executive producing credits include Sons of Anarchy and Peacock's Ponies, will serve as co-showrunner, pilot writer, and executive producer.

Joining him as co-showrunner and pilot writer is Wolfe Coleman, known for his work on 9-1-1: Lone Star. The pair previously collaborated on the NBC police drama Shades of Blue.

Longtime franchise architect and lead actor Vin Diesel is attached to executive produce the series through his production banner, One Race. He will lead an executive producing team composed of core franchise contributors, including:

  • Neal H. Moritz and Pavun Shetty representing Original Film
  • Chris Morgan, a veteran screenwriter who penned six installments of the movie saga
  • Jeff Kirschenbaum and One Race's Sam Vincent

Strategic Expansion for NBCUniversal

The series order finalizes plans that were first made public by Vin Diesel during NBCUniversal’s upfront presentation in New York. At the time, Diesel indicated that up to four separate projects within the franchise universe were in early stages of development.

According to studio sources, the project helmed by Mike Daniels and Wolfe Coleman is the first out of the gate to secure a definitive series order from Peacock.

The transition to streaming occurs as Universal Pictures navigates the conclusion of its central film narrative. The film franchise, which began 25 years ago with 2001's The Fast and the Furious, has generated substantial global box office returns but faces steep production expenses for its large-scale theatrical stunts.

During the upfront presentation, Vin Diesel noted that entering television was driven by a decade of fan demand to follow legacy figures deeper into their individual backgrounds.

"They wanted us to expand the legacy characters, their stories," Vin Diesel said. He added that the decision to proceed was solidified when Donna Langley assumed broader oversight of the studio group, ensuring "the integrity of the characters, the international appeal, what makes us all feel like family would be protected in the TV space".

Unresolved Details and Media Impact

While the foundational creative team has been established, concrete details regarding the narrative focus remain strictly protected. Studio representatives have not confirmed whether lead theatrical cast members will make appearances or if the series will focus entirely on secondary legacy characters.

Furthermore, specific production timelines and casting notices have not yet been disclosed by Universal Television.

Industry analysts view the move as a significant programming gamble for Peacock, which trails larger streaming competitors in subscriber volume. Securing exclusive episodic content from a globally recognized intellectual property could serve as a reliable engine for customer acquisition, provided the television format can successfully replicate the scale and automotive appeal that defined the theatrical releases.

What Happens Next

Pre-production and pilot script development are expected to advance under Mike Daniels and Wolfe Coleman. The long-range planning indicates that filming schedules will likely be coordinated to align with the final marketing push for Fast Forever in early 2028. Further confirmations regarding the broader slate of rumored spin-offs will depend on the initial executive reception of this greenlit flagship project.
