The premiere episode of Nia Liston: The Merciless Maiden, titled "Rising From the Darkness," introduces viewers to a world of floating islands, ancient magic, and a protagonist carrying the memories of a battle-hardened warrior. The series opens by establishing the legendary status of its titular character before diving into the core conflict of her supernatural reincarnation.
A Warrior Reborn in a Fragile Body
The episode starts with an introduction to the Kingdom of Altoire, a society structured into fifteen distinct social classes where aristocrats rule from floating islands. A voiceover establishes the reputation of Nia Liston, a historic figure known by formidable titles such as "The Red Rain" and "The Rondo of Ruin". The narrative shifts immediately to Nia's inner monologue, revealing her desire to have died a warrior's death against a stronger opponent, rather than a peaceful passing.
Instead of a permanent rest, Nia suddenly awakens to the chaotic cries of a wealthy family and their servants. Confused by her failing physical state, she finds herself in a dark, liminal space face-to-face with a desperate mage. The mage confesses to using a forbidden spell for financial gain. He explains that the original soul of the body had already departed, and he substituted Nia's soul in its place to satisfy the girl's aristocratic parents. The mage implores Nia to survive for at least one day so he can collect his payment and flee the island.
Upon waking fully in the physical world, Nia realizes she has been placed inside the ailing, four-year-old body of an aristocrat's daughter. Despite being shaken frantically by her grieving parents, Nia confirms she is alive. Recognizing that the illness is concentrated in her new body's lungs, Nia utilizes her intrinsic knowledge of chi powers to take control of her energy, suppress the disease, and save herself from immediate death. Though her memories remain missing, her soul retains its martial instincts.
Adapting to House Liston and Magivision
As the days progress, Nia adjusts to her new reality under the care of her maid, Lynokis. The physical toll of her recovery leaves Nia with distinct white hair—a visual consequence of using her vital energy to fight off the illness. Through gradual meals and internal chi circulation, her health steadily improves.
Nia learns that her new family, House Liston, belongs to the elite Fourth Class of the kingdom and presides over 17 floating islands. Her older brother, Neal Liston, returns home to celebrate her recovery. Observing her family and the household staff, Nia silently evaluates their strength, noting that while Lynokis, Neal, and the elderly butler possess decent physical capabilities, she could easily defeat them with one hand from her wheelchair.
To alleviate her boredom, Neal introduces Nia to magivision, a magical broadcasting technology. Nia is instantly captivated by the device. Her parents, who operate the Liston Broadcasting Station, originally used the medium to plead with the public for a cure for their daughter. With Nia now stable, they request that she appear on a broadcast to announce her miraculous recovery. Nia agrees, viewing it as a duty to repay the massive financial debts her parents incurred while trying to save her life. During the live broadcast, Nia proudly refuses to hide her white hair, declaring it as proof of her determination to survive.
The Public Eye and a Display of Skill
The broadcast triggers a massive public response, flooding the estate with fan letters and driving up the sales of MagiPads across the kingdom. Capitalizing on her popularity, the broadcasting director features Nia in a new program titled "Nia Liston's Occupation Observation."
During a filming session at a sword restoration workshop, Nia observes a master artisan and feels a familiar urge to test his skills. When the director asks a local guard for a test swing to capture dramatic footage, the guard performs a basic strike against a shield but fails to cut through it. The guard defensively remarks that slicing the shield would be impossible with a ceremonial sword.
Nia challenges the claim, taking the weapon into her own hands. Channeling her chi powers through her fragile four-year-old arms, she executes a flawless, high-speed slice that cleanly severs both the sword blade and the practice shield. When a stunned Lynokis questions where a toddler learned such advanced swordsmanship, Nia deflects the interrogation by claiming she saw it in a picture book.
The episode ends with Nia's father delivering major news: Nia has received a formal job offer from the prestigious Ice Rose Theater Company located in the royal capital. While Lynokis reacts with ecstatic excitement over the prospect of meeting the popular figures known as the Twin Ice Princes, Nia remains detached. Looking out over the balcony, she wonders if leaving her home for the capital will finally bring her what she truly desires—a challenger capable of giving her a real fight.
