Anne Hathaway
has secured her third number 1 film as a leading actress at the box office this year following the successful opening weekend of her new psychological thriller, Verity. The Amazon MGM Studios film debuted at the top of the domestic box office charts, solidifying Hathaway's position as one of the year's most reliable theatrical draws.

The success of Verity follows two previous chart-topping blockbusters for the actress this summer: the legacy sequel The Devil Wears Prada 2 and Christopher Nolan’s epic The Odyssey. Together, the multi-genre slate has driven Hathaway's cumulative global box office total past a landmark $2 billion in a single calendar year.

Verity Leads the Weekend Box Office Charts

Directed by Michael Showalter, Verity opened to an estimated $32.6 million from 3,510 domestic theaters. The project, which reportedly cost $40 million to produce, is an adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s best-selling psychological romance novel. Anne Hathaway stars alongside Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett.

The film's debut easily outpaced its direct competition, the Warner Bros. big-budget satire Digger, starring Tom Cruise and directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu. Digger fell short of expectations, opening to a disappointing $12 million to $15 million against a reported $160 million production budget.

While critics gave Verity mixed reviews—resulting in a 34% approval rating on the aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes—the film bypassed critical reception to tap directly into Hoover's established fanbase. The theatrical run follows previous successful Hoover adaptations like 2024’s It Ends with Us, which grossed $351 million worldwide.

A Summer of Record-Breaking Blockbusters

Hathaway's box office run began its historic ascent earlier this summer with the high-profile release of The Devil Wears Prada 2. Reprising her iconic role as Andy Sachs opposite Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt, the 20th Century Studios sequel earned $76.7 million in its opening frame and ultimately surpassed $691 million globally.

The momentum accelerated in July with The Odyssey, a massive historical epic written and directed by Christopher Nolan. The IMAX-shot production pulled in a stellar $123.5 million during its opening weekend. It went on to clear more than $1.1 billion worldwide, breaking records to temporarily become the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time.

Industry tracking groups highlight that Hathaway's films have collectively generated nearly $900 million domestically and more than $2.55 billion across global markets before this current weekend.

Strategic Range Replaces Franchise Reliance

The unprecedented volume of theatrical releases for Hathaway is part of a dense five-film layout across diverse genres. In addition to her three number 1 hits, Hathaway starred in the A24 pop-star musical drama Mother Mary in April and the David Robert Mitchell science fiction thriller The End of Oak Street in August.

While The End of Oak Street proved a modest success with a $121 million global return on an $80–92 million budget, Mother Mary struggled commercially, pulling in just $3 million against its $20 million budget.

Hathaway addressed the contrasting trajectories of her projects in a recent red carpet interview. "Two movies have done unbelievably well and one movie was very well respected," Hathaway noted, emphasizing her appreciation for the creative variety.

What Happens Next for Anne Hathaway

With Verity firmly established at the top of the box office, entertainment analysts expect the film to maintain stable momentum throughout October, benefiting from a lack of direct psychological thrillers in the autumn marketplace.

Hathaway, who recently shared that she is expecting a child, indicated she intends to take a step back from promotional tours for the remaining months of the year. Her high-velocity output is expected to resume in the coming year, with Disney reportedly planning production on the highly anticipated sequel The Princess Diaries 3.
