The episode 12 of The World's Strongest Rearguard starts with Arihito Atobe preparing to leave for District 7 once his party's equipment reinforcement is complete. Their move means leaving behind people who have supported them, but Guild staff member Louisa surprises Arihito by asking to continue overseeing the party even after their advancement. Since guild employees can transfer between districts, Arihito gladly agrees, giving the group a familiar ally as they move into a new stage of their journey.
Their next visitor is Seraphina, who comes to thank the party again for helping rescue the stranded Seekers. As a reward, she gives them a voucher for the Islet of Illusion, a guild-managed retreat built around a small island labyrinth. The monsters there are raised and trained at several facilities, making the location both scenic and controlled. More importantly, the voucher has no expiration or usage restriction, allowing the party to visit whenever they choose.
Arihito realizes that he has not taken a single day off since arriving in Labyrinth Country. Seraphina points out that constantly pushing forward can eventually damage a party's physical stamina and mental focus. For Seekers, proper food, sleep, rest, and preparation are fundamental. Arihito accepts the advice, recognizing that his companions may need the break just as much as he does.
When the party arrives at the Islet of Illusion, everyone is stunned by how luxurious the retreat is. Instead of the modest getaway they imagined, they find themselves surrounded by beautiful scenery and enough comfort to make them feel like honored guests. Tropical drinks are available, and the group immediately starts enjoying the chance to relax.
Kyouka has something specific she wants to see, so she asks Arihito to accompany her. Her destination turns out to be an area where the retreat raises Coral Peigos, monsters that resemble adorable penguins. Unlike many of the dangerous creatures the party has encountered in labyrinths, Coral Peigos are generally peaceful as long as they are not startled. Visitors can even approach them and feed them.
Kyouka and Arihito happily try feeding the creatures Sword Trout. The Coral Peigos also eat shrimp, crabs, seaweed, and even coral. Their ability to consume coral is connected to their unusual biology: they create magic stones inside their bodies and eventually lay those stones like eggs. Most of the Coral Peigos on the island produce tide stones.
The conversation takes a more interesting turn when Kyouka asks whether ordinary Seekers can keep Coral Peigos. The answer is complicated. A Seeker must first encounter a Named Coral Peigo and obtain a particular item from it. Such monsters are extremely rare, and the retreat has not seen a Named Coral Peigo for a very long time. The staff also reveals that the Coral Peigos on the island have seemed restless for quite some time.
After enjoying the creatures, Kyouka reflects on how comforting it is to see peaceful monsters. Their previous encounters have mostly involved creatures that were frightening, powerful, or dangerous enough to force the party into battle. She also acknowledges how often Arihito has protected her. Arihito returns the sentiment, pointing out that she has saved him many times as well.
The quiet conversation is interrupted when they notice that Theresia is missing. When Arihito and Kyouka return to the lodge, they find Misaki and Suzuna dealing with a disagreement. The situation is quickly brought under control, but the important question is where Theresia went. Misaki explains that she saw her heading toward the forest alone.
Arihito immediately becomes concerned. He and Kyouka follow Theresia into the forest, eventually reaching the end of a walking trail. There, they find her near a spring. Something appears to have caught her attention beneath the water. Arihito decides to follow her, but the spring proves much deeper than expected. As he continues downward, he begins struggling to breathe. The situation becomes dangerous enough that the others panic and call out to him. Arihito eventually loses consciousness and is pulled back to safety.
Once he recovers, Arihito learns that Theresia is fine. He also discovers why she went into the spring in the first place: she had found something at the bottom. The party realizes that their supposedly peaceful retreat contains a secret that the guild itself apparently never discovered. Arihito investigates and uses Morale Discharge, triggering the mechanism hidden beneath the spring. Instead of simply revealing another section of the island, it activates a teleportation system. The entire party is transported somewhere completely unknown.
Arihito checks the map and is stunned to find that their new position is marked as unexplored territory. He quickly pieces together what has happened. The Islet of Illusion is not simply one isolated island labyrinth. It appears to be part of a larger collection of islands scattered across the ocean, with the newly discovered island accessible only through teleportation. Before the party can fully process the discovery, they encounter an enormous Coral Peigo. Unlike the small, cute creatures they were feeding earlier, this one is gigantic. It is also a Named monster called Jeweled Wings Dancing Over Frozen Wasteland.
The creature immediately attacks, covering the area in freezing cold. Arihito's party is forced to react quickly as the temperature plunges and the monster unleashes its ability. However, Arihito notices that something is unusual about its behavior. Rather than attacking with the calculated aggression of a typical hostile monster, the Coral Peigo seems confused and frightened. Arihito stops his companions from killing it. He reasons that the Named Coral Peigo may have attacked simply because the party suddenly appeared on an island where it had apparently lived alone since spawning. Their unexpected arrival frightened the creature, causing it to defend itself.
Instead of treating it like an enemy, Arihito proposes taking it back to the original island and introducing it to the other Coral Peigos. The rest of the party agrees. After approaching the enormous creature carefully, Arihito reassures it and offers it the chance to leave the lonely island behind. The plan works. The Named Coral Peigo accepts Arihito and follows the party back through the teleportation mechanism.
When they return, the retreat staff are astonished. Not only has Arihito's party discovered a hidden island, they have returned with a Named Coral Peigo. The staff explains that a White Jeweled Feather is required to make a Coral Peigo obey its master, confirming that Arihito somehow obtained exactly the item needed. The party then introduces the Named Coral Peigo to the others. The enormous creature immediately becomes happy among its own kind, transforming what could have been a monster battle into a surprisingly touching reunion.
The emotional payoff continues when a jewel-like object falls from the giant Coral Peigo's eye. The staff explains that the tears of Jeweled Wings Dancing Over Frozen Wasteland become rare jewels known as Snow Drops. Seeing the creature shed them is unusual, but for Arihito, the real reward is knowing that the lonely monster is no longer alone. The Named Coral Peigo also appears to acknowledge Arihito as its master. The staff explains that if Arihito has access to a contracted ranch, he can keep the creature there. Yet Arihito is more interested in the fact that it has finally found companions of its own kind.
The experience leaves the party reflecting on how easily things could have gone differently. If they had simply defeated the Named monster, they would never have witnessed its reunion with the other Coral Peigos. Arihito recognizes that some encounters are worth resolving without violence. With the vacation coming to an end, the party turns its attention toward District 7. Cion suggests keeping reserve equipment and changing gear depending on the labyrinth they enter. Arihito immediately approves the idea, and they decide to rent a storehouse where their equipment can be organized and maintained.
Arihito also entrusts the task of reorganizing their gear to Cion while he handles the budget. Cion is thrilled to finally have a practical responsibility within the party. She also wants to use the special skills available to her as a Dissector, abilities that can only be used while Seeking. Arihito then thinks about the people who have entrusted loved ones to his party. He promises that Rikerton and Falma can trust them to bring their precious family members home safely. The journey ahead will be long, but the party is becoming increasingly organized and determined.
As their departure approaches, Arihito becomes sentimental. He considers writing letters to the people who helped them once the group settles in District 7. The thought of leaving familiar faces behind makes him realize how many connections the party has formed during its journey. The conversation becomes playful when Theresia and Suzuna are teased about sleeping beside Arihito if he ever feels lonely. The awkward exchange highlights the growing closeness among the party members, even as Theresia's unusual reaction hints at feelings she struggles to express.
Later, Theresia suddenly panics, leaving the others confused. The episode does not fully explain what causes her reaction, but the moment adds another layer of mystery to her behavior. That night, Arihito looks up at the clear sky and reflects on everything still ahead. His goals remain difficult: he wants to restore Theresia to human form, help Elitia's friend, and assist parties devastated by labyrinth disasters like Georg's group. Yet he also recognizes that his path will not be easy.
For the first time, however, Arihito understands that the journey does not have to consist entirely of danger and struggle. The peaceful day at the retreat has shown him that his party can create moments of happiness even while carrying serious responsibilities. The following day, the party reaches the gate to District 7. A familiar guild employee welcomes them and reveals that she specifically requested a transfer after learning that Arihito's group had advanced so quickly. After checking their licenses, she approves their passage.
Her farewell carries special weight: she tells the rookies that their true adventure in Labyrinth Country begins now and says she will be waiting for them in District 1. As the party finally steps into District 7, Arihito thinks about everything he still wants to accomplish. He may be a Rearguard, a role that cannot simply fight alone, but he has discovered the strength that comes from relying on the people beside him.
With Theresia, Elitia, Kyouka, Suzuna, Misaki, and Cion at his side, Arihito moves forward with a clear goal. He intends to become the world's strongest Rearguard—not because he can accomplish everything by himself, but because he knows exactly who he wants beside him when he does.
The World's Strongest Rearguard Episode 12 works as both a relaxing character-focused finale and a setup for the party's next chapter. The Islet of Illusion gives Arihito and his companions a chance to recover, but the hidden teleportation mechanism transforms their vacation into an unexpected labyrinth discovery. The Named Coral Peigo storyline is especially meaningful because Arihito chooses understanding over simply defeating the creature, showing how much the party has matured. Its reunion with the other Coral Peigos creates the episode's warmest emotional moment, while the discovery of Snow Drops adds another memorable piece of world-building. The final move into District 7 gives the episode strong forward momentum, with Arihito reflecting on his goals and recognizing that his greatest strength comes from the companions fighting and traveling beside him.
