Sami Zayn is once again the WWE Champion after defeating CM Punk in a chaotic, interference-laden main event on this week’s episode of Friday Night SmackDown in Mexico City. The victory marks Zayn’s second reign with the company’s top prize, ending a bitter pursuit that followed the abrupt conclusion of his previous nine-day stint with the title.
Frustrated by Zayn's persistent complaints regarding the unfair nature of his first title loss, Punk granted the challenger a one-on-one championship opportunity. However, the champion's attempt to permanently silence his rival ultimately backfired amid a sequence of late-match run-ins involving Johnny Gargano, Candice LeRae, and Kevin Owens.
Interference Marches into the Main Event
Seeking to tilt the odds in his favor, Zayn formed a pre-match alliance with Johnny Gargano. Under the agreement, Gargano agreed to assist Zayn in securing the WWE Championship with the understanding that he would receive the first opportunity to challenge for the gold afterward.
The alliance proved critical late in the contest. As Punk locked Zayn into the Anaconda Vise, Zayn appeared ready to submit. However, Gargano and his wife, Candice LeRae, arrived at ringside to distract the official, ensuring the referee never witnessed the champion's submission hold.
The distraction triggered a volatile sequence of events. Gargano entered the ring brandishing the championship belt, but his physical intervention was short-lived as Punk quickly neutralized him with a Go to Sleep (GTS).
Chaotic Finish Leads to Title Change
The landscape of the match shifted again moments later when Kevin Owens rushed the ring. Owens seized the championship belt with the apparent intent of striking Zayn. Zayn managed to duck the incoming blow, causing Owens to inadvertently strike Punk with the heavy gold title instead.

With Punk still disoriented from the accidental title belt strike, Zayn capitalized immediately. He executed a definitive Helluva Kick on the champion, securing the pinfall and the three-count from the referee.
