Sacrifice Trailer: Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Evans Star in Netflix Satirical Thriller

Netflix
has officially released the first trailer and promotional materials for its upcoming star-studded satirical thriller, Sacrifice, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Romain Gavras. The streaming platform confirmed that the action-adventure comedy will debut globally on October 16, with initial localized releases highlighting availability in the United States and France.

The Sacrifice trailer offers audiences their first extended look at an ensemble cast led by Chris Evans and Anya Taylor-Joy. The film, which marks the English-language debut for Romain Gavras, previously held its world premiere in the Special Presentations section of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Following its festival run, the feature was acquired by Netflix for worldwide distribution.

A Star-Studded Environmental Gala Gone Wrong

According to the official synopsis provided by Netflix, the movie centers on Mike Tyler (played by Chris Evans), an insecure and fading action movie star attempting to rebuild his Hollywood career following a humiliating, viral public meltdown on a Los Angeles freeway.

Tyler’s initial step back into the public eye brings him to an exclusive, black-tie environmental charity gala held at an austere Greek mine. The high-society soirée is hosted by a cold billionaire entrepreneur, Ben Bracken (Vincent Cassel), and his wife, Gloria (Salma Hayek Pinault).

The evening of empty speeches and performative activism is violently disrupted when a radicalized group of eco-warriors storms the venue. Led by a passionate zealot named Joan (Anya Taylor-Joy), the militants take the wealthy attendees hostage.

Driven by a mysterious prophecy following the fiery death of her mother, Joan believes that an impending apocalyptic extinction event will wipe out human life on Earth within three days. According to her group's radical doctrine, the only way to thwart the catastrophe and cleanse the planet is to offer three specific socialites as human sacrifices to a nearby active volcano.

The three selected hostages represent archetypes of modern society: Mike Tyler, whom the group views as their "hero"; Ben Bracken, labeled as their "villain"; and Katie (Ambika Mod), an unlucky performer caught in the crossfire. Seeing a bizarre public relations opportunity to "side with the youth," Tyler initially cooperates before realizing the true, lethal stakes of the abduction.

High-Profile Ensemble Cast and Creative Team

The project features a highly recognizable international ensemble. Alongside Chris Evans, Anya Taylor-Joy, Vincent Cassel, and Salma Hayek Pinault, the film stars:

  • Sam Richardson
  • Ambika Mod (known for her breakout role in One Day)
  • John Malkovich
  • Charli xcx, the British pop performer making a notable screen appearance
  • Jonatan “Yung Lean” Leandoer, the Swedish rapper making his feature film acting debut
  • Jade Croot
  • Miriam Silverman

Director Romain Gavras, widely recognized for his striking visual style in the French urban-riot drama Athena and iconic music videos for global artists, co-wrote the screenplay alongside American playwright and Succession writer Will Arbery. The production was filmed on location across various distinct landscapes in Bulgaria and Greece, including a marble quarry in Volakas and the volcanic regions of Santorini.

The film's atmospheric score was composed by French musician GENER8ION, incorporating a blend of electronic elements, string instruments, and choral arrangements. Notably, Anya Taylor-Joy also serves as a producer on the project under her production banner, LadyKiller Films.

Industry Tracking and Expectations

By blending dark comedy, psychological drama, and high-octane action mechanics, Sacrifice directly targets themes of celebrity culture, elite hypocrisy, and contemporary media spectacles. Industry analysts note that the heavy aesthetic style, combined with the massive star power of Chris Evans and Anya Taylor-Joy, positions the title as a major autumn streaming addition for Netflix's global subscriber base.

The Netflix Sacrifice movie will be available for streaming worldwide starting October 16.
