Principal photography has officially commenced in Los Angeles on My Darling California, the highly anticipated upcoming period crime thriller movie from writer-director Elijah Bynum. Backed by independent financiers, the star-studded 1980s neo-noir features an ensemble cast led by Oscar-winner Jessica Chastain, Chris Evans, Chris Pine, and Mikey Madison.
The independent film production, which marks Bynum's follow-up to his critically acclaimed Sundance drama Magazine Dreams, secured a significant tax incentive allocation from the state of California to film entirely on location. Production on the feature began ahead of an anticipated global theatrical release.
An Intertwining Narrative of Crime and Ambition
Set against the sun-bleached backdrop of 1980 Los Angeles, My Darling California is described by its producers as a dark, comic crime thriller movie and an "American noir of ambition, greed, and violence". The narrative charts how a single, violent event ripples across the city, irreversibly weaving together six distinct individuals who are all chasing the promise of a better life.
According to official plot details released by production company Anton, the interconnected characters include:
- A fallen television news anchor and her unfaithful televangelist husband
- A rising country music idol searching for a professional breakthrough
- Two small-time crooks looking for an easy score
- A newly released ex-convict trying to navigate life on the outside
As their paths cross in a web of seduction, deceit, and unexpected turmoil, the characters find their fragile hopes of reinvention colliding with the harsh realities of a cutthroat city.
A High-Profile Independent Ensemble Cast
The project first garnered substantial attention within the global film market due to its prominent ensemble, a casting strategy increasingly utilized by independent financiers to de-risk mid-budget projects outside the traditional Hollywood studio system.

Actor Josh Brolin was originally attached to anchor the film alongside Chastain and Pine when the package was introduced at the American Film Market. However, Brolin was forced to drop out due to persistent scheduling conflicts, prompting Marvel alumnus Chris Evans to step into the role. Madison joined the thriller shortly after her breakout, award-winning performance in Anora.
Behind the Camera and Financial Backing
In addition to the high-profile cast, Bynum has assembled an experienced creative team of department heads to bring the period-accurate 1980s aesthetic to life. Academy Award-nominated editor Leslie Jones is handling the cutting room, while Chayse Irvin serves as the director of photography. The film's distinct look is overseen by production designer Judy Becker and costume designer Erin Benach.
On the business side, international film studio and financier Anton is fully backing and producing the film alongside independent film production banner 2AM. Additional co-financing is provided by Scott Budnick’s 1Community, an entertainment company focused on social impact. David Hinojosa, Alex Coco, and Sébastien Raybaud are credited as producers, with CAA Media Finance co-representing the worldwide distribution rights.
