Moomintroll: Winter's Warmth Expands to PS5 and Nintendo Switch 2 on September 18

The indie video game landscape is set to revisit the quiet, snowy expanses of Moominvalley. Norwegian developer Hyper Games announced that its story-driven puzzle adventure game, Moomintroll: Winter's Warmth, will launch on September 18, 2026, for the PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 platforms. The upcoming console rollout expands the availability of the title, which initially debuted on PC via Steam and the original Nintendo Switch earlier this year.

Alongside the digital launch on these new platforms, physical editions of the game will become available for the PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch on the same date. According to the developer, players who already own or purchase the standard Nintendo Switch version will be eligible for a free digital upgrade to the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition.

Waking Up to an Unrecognizable Moominvalley

Moomintroll: Winter's Warmth is a story-driven, third-person adventure that functions as a spiritual successor to the studio’s 2024 musical title, Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley. While that previous project explored the vibrant melodies of spring, the new game focuses on a solitary and colder atmosphere.

The narrative takes direct inspiration from Moominland Midwinter, the 1957 novel penned by celebrated Finnish author Tove Jansson. The gameplay centers on Moomintroll, who unexpectedly wakes up early from his traditional winter hibernation. Finding his entire family deeply asleep and unable to rouse, he is forced to step outside into a frozen world cloaked in frost by the mysterious Lady of the Cold.

"Our reluctant hero then decides to bring back spring to wake everyone up and get his best friend, Snufkin, back to Moominvalley," said Kristina Haley, Marketing and Community Manager at Hyper Games, in a statement shared by PlayStation.Blog.

Hand-Drawn Art and Historical Tributes

To preserve the distinct look of Tove Jansson's original books and comics, Hyper Games utilizes a mixed-media design approach. The environments combine three-dimensional structures with two-dimensional, hand-painted watercolor textures and pencil-drawn character outlines. The game also features a deformable snow layer that reacts dynamically to the player's movements and environmental interactions.

The developers noted that the game's quieter, more melancholic tone honors the underlying philosophy of the Moomin franchise. Tove Jansson created the first Moomin stories in 1945 as an escape from the harsh realities of World War II and fascism.

The game includes specific nods to Jansson’s real life, including the character Too-Ticky, who was originally modeled after Jansson’s lifelong partner, Tuulikki Pietilä. "Tove was a private, but courageous person and in addition to war, she lived through a period where having a same-gender partner was illegal," Kristina Haley explained, noting that the author frequently used concealed storytelling elements to convey love and community.

Mechanics and Platform Availability

The core gameplay of Moomintroll: Winter's Warmth revolves around exploration, environmental puzzles, and completing tasks for the unusual creatures that inhabit the valley during the winter months. Players must navigate snowy trails, cross frozen terrain, and solve regional quests to push back the cold and find small pockets of warmth.

The title is published by Kakehashi Games and supports a broad suite of international languages, including English, Japanese, French, German, Spanish, Simplified Chinese, and Korean. The file sizes are optimized for console architecture, with the Nintendo Switch 2 variant requiring approximately 3.9 gigabytes of storage space.

Following its initial PC and Switch release on April 27, 2026, the game achieved a "Very Positive" designation from users on Steam, holding a 97% positive rating across hundreds of reviews. Critics have praised the title as a gentle, family-friendly adventure that introduces players to the heavier, introspective themes of loneliness and resilience found in Tove Jansson's literary work.

The digital downloads for the PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 editions, alongside the coordinated physical retail shipments, are scheduled to go live globally on September 18.
