With the countdown running, Hal threatens to kill the man unless he tells the truth. The pressure works. The supposed Hammond admits he is human and identifies himself as Hector Gutierrez. Gutierrez says he was an engineering student when Macon offered him advanced technology that could help his family and community. He became part of the operation and was used as the false Hammond. Then he reveals the real Manhunter's identity: Will Macon.
The revelation explains the ranch's weapons and Macon's influence over Rushville. Gutierrez was only a decoy protecting the real infiltrator.
Afterward, John makes his own confession. He secretly put on the Green Lantern ring at Macon's ranch and only needed to recite the oath to officially become the Lantern for Sector 2814. He deliberately stopped because he wanted to prove to Hal that he could handle the responsibility instead of simply taking the ring because the Guardians ordered him to.
Hal understands. For the first time, he openly admits that John could eventually be better than him. Hal also admits that he did break his vow by visiting Sinestro and that Sinestro gave him the information about the Manhunter's crystal heart.
He then explains how Manhunters operate: they infiltrate communities by exploiting vulnerable points, build dependence, and manipulate anyone who threatens their power. John immediately sees the pattern in Macon's operation. Macon has created a community dependent on his benefactor's technology and miracles while secretly protecting the creature behind them.
Hal and John contact the alien hit squad. Because the aliens trust John more than Hal, John tells them the target has been found and arranges a meeting at a cafe outside Rushville. But Hal is still thinking about Zoe. He finally understands why John never seemed devastated by her apparent death. John had a feeling that she survived.
Hal recognizes that this instinct may have uncovered the next piece of the mystery. The episode's final twist is John's suspicion that Zoe may also be a Manhunter. If Macon is the creature controlling Rushville, Zoe's survival means another layer of the conspiracy remains hidden. Lanterns Episode 4 pushes the season's mystery into much more dangerous territory while simultaneously developing the complicated relationship between Hal Jordan and John Stewart. The discovery that Will Macon is actually a Manhunter changes the meaning of everything surrounding Rushville, while the mystery surrounding Zoe leaves the episode with another major question waiting to be answered.
The strongest part of the episode is the evolving relationship between Hal and John. What begins as a tense mentor-and-rookie partnership gradually becomes something more complicated as Hal realizes that John may genuinely be capable of replacing him. Their conflict is no longer simply about experience versus inexperience; it is about Hal accepting that the future of the Green Lantern Corps may already be standing beside him.
The Manhunter storyline also gives the season a much larger science-fiction mystery. Macon's influence over Rushville is not simply the result of advanced technology. It is part of a carefully constructed operation designed to make an entire community dependent on an alien infiltrator.
