Disney Hires Character.AI Chief to Drive Modernization and Tech Push

The Walt Disney Company
has appointed Karandeep Anand, the outgoing chief executive of generative artificial intelligence startup Character.AI, as its first-ever chief technology officer. The newly created corporate role is part of a broader leadership restructuring under Disney Chief Executive Officer Josh D'Amaro, who took the helm of the entertainment giant in March.

Karandeep Anand will officially step into his new position on October 2, serving as senior executive vice president and chief technology officer. He is tasked with overseeing Disney's global enterprise technology, infrastructure, data systems, and artificial intelligence platforms. The company confirmed that a number of technical staff members from Character.AI are also expected to transition to Disney alongside him.

The appointment marks a significant effort by Disney hires Character.AI chief strategies to reshape its identity as a tech-forward entertainment business, bridging the gap between traditional storytelling, streaming infrastructure, and emerging AI technologies.

Accelerating the 'One Disney' Strategy

In an official statement released on Friday, Josh D'Amaro emphasized that the broad technical background of Karandeep Anand makes him uniquely suited for the company's current trajectories. "Karandeep brings a rare mix of experience across infrastructure, consumer technology and AI," Josh D'Amaro said, noting that the new executive will help advance the company's efforts to build "One Disney"—a unified, modernized digital experience across its distinct entertainment, sports, and experiences divisions.

Increasing tech proficiency is seen by industry analysts as a vital factor for Disney as it battles for younger consumers who increasingly split time between traditional television, streaming services, interactive gaming, and social platforms. The Disney streaming ecosystem, centered on Disney+ and Hulu, remains an active focus for management. Josh D'Amaro has prioritized making Disney+ the digital centerpiece for consumer touchpoints, looking to cross-promote theme parks and consumer products directly through the application.

Wall Street has historically pressured media conglomerates over slowing growth in traditional cable and broadcast television networks. Disney shares have fallen roughly 6 percent this year and 40 percent over the past five years, creating urgency for executive shifts that highlight clear technical avenues for revenue.

The hiring of Karandeep Anand follows a series of executive updates finalized just a day earlier. On Thursday, Disney appointed former Google and YouTube veteran Adam Smith as Chairman of Direct-to-Consumer for Disney Entertainment, while moving long-time insider Joe Earley into a dedicated television franchise and content leadership post.

Navigating Complex Corporate Histories

The recruitment of Karandeep Anand comes roughly one year after public legal tensions between the two companies. In September 2025, Disney legal representatives issued a cease-and-desist letter to Character.AI, demanding the startup immediately remove user-generated chatbot personas modeled after copyrighted Disney properties.

At the time, Disney criticized the unauthorized use of its intellectual property, alleging that consumer-created versions of its family characters were subject to inappropriate interactions on the chatbot platform. Character.AI subsequently complied with the requests and removed the disputed material.

Character.AI has also experienced broader corporate and regulatory shifts. In mid-2024, Google struck a non-exclusive technology licensing deal valued at over $2.5 billion with Character.AI, which simultaneously saw the startup's original founders, Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas, return to the Google DeepMind AI division. Karandeep Anand, who previously held executive status at financial technology firm Brex and Meta's Facebook, stepped in as Chief Executive Officer of Character.AI following that transition.

During his leadership period, Character.AI weathered substantial public scrutiny, including multiple civil lawsuits regarding platform safety, minor safeguards, and chatbot liability. Despite these friction points, Disney explicitly highlighted the executive performance of Karandeep Anand, stating that he successfully led the platform through a period of fast-paced scale while also making user trust and safety a priority.

Next Steps for Disney's Tech Infrastructure

Karandeep Anand brings an extensive technical pedigree to his new desk at the Disney Burbank headquarters. After completing a computer science degree at the International Institute of Information Technology in Hyderabad, India, he spent 15 years at Microsoft, where he helped construct the fundamental framework for its Azure cloud-computing division. He later moved to Facebook, guiding core teams across gaming infrastructure, corporate analytics, and high-revenue advertising systems.

"I've admired Disney my entire life for how it blends unforgettable storytelling with the latest technology," Karandeep Anand said regarding his move. He expressed that his focus would be on leveraging internal technology capabilities to securely bridge customer engagement across global segments.

What remains to be seen is exactly how Disney chief technology officer frameworks will deploy this expanded technical team within consumer products, theme parks, or creative pre-production. The company has already pursued selective partnerships with external AI developers, notably signing a $1 billion collaborative arrangement with OpenAI to license its legacy characters for safe use in creative short-form video generation platform tools like Sora.

As Karandeep Anand assumes the office in October, his primary corporate mandate will involve assessing how Disney AI strategy steps build, deliver, and unify its foundational entertainment technology stacks across all digital and media properties.
