The Clever Crab and the Greedy Heron: A Lesson on Trust and Greed

An aging heron finds himself too weak to hunt, so he devises a dark plan to trick an entire pond into trusting him. Little does he know, one clever creature is about to see right through his trap.

Once upon a time, a heron lived by the edge of a vibrant pond. For years, he filled his belly by catching the fish that swam in the clear waters. Naturally, every fish in the pond detested him, but the heron didn't mind their hatred at all—he only cared about how delicious they tasted. He hunted with ease and never went to bed hungry.

As time passed, however, old age began to creep up on the heron. He grew weak, his movements turned sluggish, and his once-swift wings began to fail him. Hunting became an exhausting chore. Every time he lunged for a meal, the nimble fish would easily slip through his beak. His joints ached, and his energy drained after just a few minutes of effort.

The fish quickly noticed the change. They began to mock him openly, swimming dangerously close just to taunt his slow reflexes. The heron would crash face-first into the water, missing his targets entirely while the fish swam away laughing. Stranded in his old age and unable to hunt, the heron went two whole days without a single bite to eat. Realizing he would starve if things didn't change, he sat down and devised a cunning plan to acquire food through deception without any physical labor.

The next morning, the heron walked down to the water’s edge with a deeply sorrowful expression. He stood perfectly still, showing absolutely no interest in hunting. The local frogs, fish, and crabs watched him from a distance, completely confused by his sudden misery.

A large crab noticed the heron's despair and decided to crawl over to investigate. He asked the bird why he looked so incredibly sad. With a heavy sigh, the heron replied that he had terrible news regarding the future of the pond, but claimed he lacked the courage to share it. The crab insisted, reminding the heron that they all lived there and deserved to know the truth.

Playing his part perfectly, the heron explained that he had overheard a group of humans planning to fill the entire pond with soil to plant crops. He wept false tears, claiming he was heartbroken because not a single creature in the pond would survive.

Panic gripped the pond. The crab immediately rushed back to break the news to the others. The fish erupted into chaos, terrified because they could not survive outside of the water. Seeing that his trick was working perfectly, the heron offered a solution. He claimed he knew of a secret, beautiful lake nearby where they would all be completely safe from humans. He offered to carry them to this new sanctuary a few at a time.

Desperate for survival, the creatures begged for his help. The heron agreed, but set a strict condition. Because of his old age and frailty, he claimed he could only carry a small group of fish in his beak on each trip, and would need to take a long rest between journeys. The trusting creatures readily accepted his terms.

On the very first trip, the heron scooped up a few trusting fish in his beak and took off into the sky. But he had no intention of finding another lake. Instead, he flew directly to a secluded, rocky mountain ridge. He tossed the fish onto the rocks and greedily devoured them. Finally full, he rested in the shade before returning to the pond to repeat the process. Day after day, the heron enjoyed an effortless feast, and his health quickly returned to its former strength.

Eventually, the large crab decided it was time to save himself. He approached the heron and asked to be taken to the new lake. The heron, amused by the idea of trying a different kind of meat, gladly agreed.

The heron flew high into the air with the crab clutching onto his back. After flying for quite some time, the crab looked down but saw no sign of a lake anywhere. Growing anxious, the crab asked how much further they had to travel.

Believing the crab was completely helpless in mid-air, the heron laughed maniacally. He called the crab a fool and proudly confessed his entire scheme. He revealed that there was no secret lake, and that the mountain ridge below—scattered with the bones of the fish—was where the crab's journey would end.

Realizing he had been betrayed, the crab refused to give up without a fight. Before the heron could land, the crab extended his large, powerful claws and clamped them tightly around the heron's neck. The heron choked and begged for mercy, but the crab squeezed harder, snapping the bird's neck and sending him crashing to the ground.

The crab painstakingly made his way back to the old pond and shared the terrifying truth with the surviving creatures. The pond animals praised the crab for his incredible bravery and wit. When they thanked him for being so clever, the crab simply replied that it was the heron’s own insatiable greed, rather than his own intelligence, that ultimately brought about the bird's demise.
