Nanahoshi’s mysterious illness exposes the painful truth behind her desire to return home, forcing Rudeus to leave his family and chase a desperate lead on the Demon Continent.
The episode 9 of Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season 3 starts with Nanahoshi still unconscious three days after her sudden collapse. She remains unresponsive after coughing up blood, while Sylphie blames herself for what happened because she believes her magic may have caused Nanahoshi’s condition. Refusing to let anyone else take responsibility for curing her, Sylphie desperately continues trying to help as Rudeus and the others wait for answers.
Perugius has his people examine Nanahoshi, but they find no clear sign of outside interference apart from the detoxification treatment already performed. Her mana flow is stagnant, yet no one initially understands why. The situation becomes even more frightening when the group learns that Nanahoshi’s condition may not be something the people of the current era have encountered before.
The mystery is eventually identified as Dryne Syndrome, an ancient illness from a time when humans possessed much less mana than they do now. According to old records, people who could not neutralize mana entering their bodies died without exception. The disease was supposedly eradicated around 7,000 years ago as humanity’s mana reserves gradually became stronger, leaving almost no surviving knowledge about how to cure it.
Rudeus immediately asks whether there is any treatment, but the answer is frustrating: nobody knows. The records only explain that the illness disappeared, not how patients were saved. Perugius decides he can at least use Scarecoat of Time to stop time for Nanahoshi if necessary, allowing others to search for a cure while preserving her life.
However, Perugius makes it clear that his help has limits. Nanahoshi is his guest, and he will do the minimum necessary to save her, but he refuses to put himself deeply in someone else's debt or abandon his greater mission. His life is dedicated to finding and defeating Laplace when the legendary enemy eventually returns, and he will not sacrifice that goal for Nanahoshi.
That answer enrages Cliff, who believes someone as powerful as Perugius has a responsibility to help those who cannot help themselves. The argument quickly turns hostile, with Cliff accusing Perugius of abandoning Nanahoshi. Elinalise stops him before he goes too far, reminding him that losing his life in a pointless confrontation would solve nothing.
Perugius gives the group a blunt but important answer: if they believe more should be done, they need to take action themselves. Rudeus takes those words seriously. He wants to save Nanahoshi, but before he can decide what to do, they receive unexpected news—she has finally regained consciousness.
When Rudeus visits her, Nanahoshi initially responds with her usual dry attitude, but her emotional control soon collapses. She knows the group has not found a cure, and reassuring words only make her frustration worse. Nanahoshi has spent years surviving in a world whose rules make no sense to her, all while knowing that her inability to use magic leaves her especially vulnerable.
Her illness brings every fear she has been suppressing to the surface. Nanahoshi explains that her body has not changed since arriving in this world. Eight years have passed, yet she has not grown taller, her hair remains the same, her nails do not grow, and her body does not function normally. In many ways, she feels less like a person living naturally and more like something frozen outside the rules of the world.
That makes getting sick feel especially cruel. If she cannot properly change or age, why can she still suffer from illness? And because this world lacks the medical care she once took for granted, she fears that even a common disease could become a death sentence.
Nanahoshi finally breaks down and admits what she truly wants. She does not want to die in this strange world. She has never even confessed her feelings to the person she likes, and more importantly, she wants to see her parents again. Memories of her final ordinary morning in Japan flood back: her father planning to come home early, her mother preparing dinner, and Nanahoshi casually complaining about the meal without realizing it might be the last normal moment she would ever share with them.
Now, she cannot stop wondering whether her parents are still waiting for her. If she dies here, they may never learn what happened to her. Her breakdown deeply affects Rudeus. In the past, he may not have fully understood why simply returning home meant so much to her. But after building a family of his own, losing his father, and facing the danger surrounding his mother, he now understands how precious ordinary life with loved ones can be. Nanahoshi's connection to Japan may be painful for him, but he realizes that his presence might also be one of the few things keeping her connected to the world she lost.
Unable to stand by any longer, Rudeus decides to act. He asks Perugius for whatever support he can provide without interfering with his responsibilities, and Perugius agrees. Rudeus first considers asking Dragon God Orsted, but Perugius cannot contact him and doubts Orsted would know how to treat an illness that disappeared 7,000 years ago anyway.
Then Rudeus realizes that the age of the disease itself could point toward the answer. He asks Perugius to send him to the Demon Continent so he can search for Kishirika Kishirisu, the Great Emperor of the Demon World. Since Kishirika was alive during the ancient Human-Demon conflicts, Rudeus believes she might know something about Dryne Syndrome or at least where to find information about it.
The problem is that Kishirika constantly wanders across the Demon Continent, meaning the search could take months. Even so, Rudeus is determined to go. Zanoba immediately agrees to serve as his bodyguard, while Elinalise volunteers because she understands what it means to long for a homeland. Cliff also wants to join, but Rudeus gives him a different responsibility.
Because Cliff is still recovering from the effects of Nanahoshi’s treatment, Rudeus asks him to return home afterward and help care for Lucie if the journey keeps him away for too long. Rudeus knows a baby should not have to spend months without either parent, especially when Sylphie has already done so much. Sylphie reluctantly accepts the arrangement and tells him to come back safely, jokingly warning him not to lose another arm.
Before leaving, Rudeus reassures his family that Perugius's transportation magic means he can return home with almost no travel time whenever possible. He says goodbye to Aisha, the household, and everyone depending on him, then heads underground to a teleportation chamber that will take the group closer to their target.
Rudeus, Zanoba, Elinalise, and Cliff arrive on the Demon Continent and reach Rikarisu, a place Rudeus remembers from his earlier travels. Their first problem is communication because they do not all speak the local Demon-God language. Fortunately, they encounter Nokopara, an old acquaintance connected to Roxy's former party who knows the city well.
Rudeus hires Nokopara to help locate Kishirika, offering a generous reward because Nanahoshi's life may depend on finding her quickly. The search soon produces an important lead: another powerful figure has also been searching for the Great Emperor for about a year. The person in question is not Badigadi, but his older sister, King Atofe.
The group briefly considers seeking Atofe directly, but Nokopara strongly warns them against it. Before they can decide what to do, Elinalise and Cliff leave to buy food while Rudeus stays behind with Zanoba. During their conversation, Zanoba tells Rudeus that although he enjoys his current life, he still sometimes longs for the sights of his homeland. That makes him understand Nanahoshi's desperation more clearly. Her family and the person she loves may mean as much to her as his beloved figures mean to him, and that realization strengthens his commitment to save her.
Then the search takes a bizarre and unexpectedly fortunate turn. A filthy, hungry woman appears and desperately asks for food. Despite her strange behavior and terrible smell, Rudeus offers her something to eat. She happily devours the food, and the scene gives Rudeus a strong sense of déjà vu.
The mystery disappears seconds later when the woman proudly introduces herself as Kishirika Kishirisu, the very person Rudeus crossed the Demon Continent to find. Grateful for the meal, the Great Emperor declares that she owes him her life and is willing to grant him one wish.
After a journey built on desperation, ancient mysteries, and Nanahoshi's heartbreaking fear of dying far from home, Rudeus finally reaches the person who may hold the key to saving her. The episode ends with Kishirika waiting to hear his request, setting up the next step in Rudeus's race against time.
Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season 3 Episode 9 is one of the season’s strongest emotional episodes, giving Nanahoshi a heartbreaking spotlight while pushing Rudeus into an urgent new mission. Her revelation about her unchanged body, fear of dying in an unfamiliar world, and longing to see her parents again adds powerful emotional weight to the Dryne Syndrome storyline. Rudeus’s decision to search for Kishirika also highlights how much he has grown, as his own experiences with family allow him to understand Nanahoshi’s pain more clearly. The episode balances its heartbreaking moments with humor through Kishirika’s unexpected introduction, ending the episode with hope while keeping Nanahoshi’s fate uncertain.
