Flaming Dodgeball Girl Danko Episode 1 Recap: Danko Revives the Dodgeball Club and Meets Powerful New Allies

One determined girl refuses to let her father's dream disappear. With unstoppable passion and fearless throws, Danko begins an unforgettable journey to bring dodgeball back to her school.

The episode 1 of Flaming Dodgeball Girl Danko starts with an energetic introduction that presents dodgeball as one of history's fiercest competitive sports. The opening celebrates the legendary players who came before before hinting that a new fighter is about to earn her place among them. That promise quickly shifts into a fast-paced display of intense throws and unwavering determination as Danko trains with complete focus. Throughout the opening moments, the words repeatedly echo in her mind that she must always give everything she has, no matter the situation.

After the opening sequence, the story reveals Danko's daily routine. Every morning she visits her family's graves, greeting both her grandfather and her father, Danpei Ichigeki. Instead of quietly paying her respects, she practices dodgeball by throwing directly toward her father's gravestone as though he were still standing in front of her. To Danko, this is more than training. She imagines playing catch with her father and treats every throw as another lesson from him.

Her unusual practice catches the attention of Chinko Kobotoke, who immediately scolds her for throwing balls at a grave. Chinko's father, Chinnen, gently explains that Danko is simply continuing her bond with her late father, allowing her to keep practicing. Encouraged once again, Danko throws another powerful ball, determined to surpass her previous effort.

This latest throw surprises everyone. The ball pierces straight through the stone, making Chinnen remark that Danko has improved dramatically. Rather than celebrating, Danko panics and apologizes to her father, worried that she damaged the gravestone. Chinnen reassures her that it will take much more than that to truly break Danpei's memorial, while Chinko jokingly points out that the obvious solution would be to stop throwing balls at it in the first place.

The conversation changes when Danko notices an old sign from Tamagawa School's former dodgeball club. Chinko explains that it was discovered while cleaning and reveals disappointing news. The club no longer exists because it was shut down after dodgeball was considered too dangerous. Hearing this deeply affects everyone present. Danko even imagines that her father's grave is shedding tears over the loss of the club that meant so much to him. Moved by what she believes is his wish, she loudly promises that she will revive the dodgeball club herself.

Filled with determination, Danko immediately asks the school principal for permission to restart the club. Unfortunately, the principal refuses without hesitation. She argues that dodgeball has caused numerous injuries and reminds Danko of the recent gym class incident where she pushed everyone into extreme training yet ended up bruised herself. To make matters worse, the principal dismisses dodgeball as nothing more than a childish game with no real value. Those comments strike a nerve, and Danko fiercely declares that she cannot forgive anyone who insults the sport she loves. Even though the principal is startled by Danko's intense glare, she firmly rejects the request and ends the discussion.

Instead of giving up, Danko immediately searches for another solution. Chinko suggests that recruiting enough members might force the school to reconsider. Inspired by the idea, Danko begins promoting the club around campus, but almost nobody shows any interest. Realizing they need something more attractive, they make an outrageous promise by advertising that anyone who joins will receive one million yen. The unbelievable reward instantly attracts a crowd of eager students.

However, Danko never intended to hand out free money so easily. She announces that every applicant must first pass an entrance test by catching one of her throws. The excited students quickly lose confidence after experiencing the sheer speed and power of her dodgeball. One after another they fail, leaving the recruitment effort on the verge of collapse once again. Chinko worries that Danko's impossible standards will scare everyone away before the club can even begin.

Just when hope seems lost, one girl quietly steps forward and asks to take the test. Chinko begs Danko to throw gently so they do not lose their final candidate, but Danko remembers her father's constant advice to always give everything she has. Unable to hold back, she launches a full-strength throw anyway. To everyone's amazement, the mysterious girl catches it cleanly. The crowd immediately recognizes her as the popular Mochiko Etai, whose reputation has already spread throughout the school. After passing the test, Mochiko happily agrees to join the dodgeball club, although she quickly reminds Danko about the promised million yen. Embarrassed, Danko admits she may have to borrow against her allowance to keep that promise, creating one of the episode's funniest moments before the new club officially begins training together.

The newly formed club wastes no time getting to work. During practice, Danko and Mochiko are approached by Susan Canon, better known as Suzy, an athletic student famous for excelling in almost every sport. Mochiko happily greets her friend, and Danko immediately sees another chance to strengthen the club. She enthusiastically invites Suzy to join, but Suzy politely refuses because she is already committed to several other clubs. Rather than accepting the rejection, Danko boldly proposes a duel. If Danko wins, Suzy must become a member. Knowing Suzy enjoys competition, Mochiko teases her into accepting the challenge.

The contest uses unusual equipment left behind by the old dodgeball club. Both competitors must throw a ball toward a distant gong, and the first player to ring it wins. Suzy confidently chooses to use a shot put instead of a dodgeball, giving her incredible throwing power. Her heavy throw races ahead of Danko's ball and reaches the gong first, apparently securing victory. Danko is devastated and immediately apologizes to her father, believing she has failed once again. Surprisingly, Suzy refuses to celebrate. She admits that although she technically won, defeating a dodgeball player with shot put doesn't feel like a real victory. Respecting Danko's determination and honesty, Suzy keeps her promise and joins the dodgeball club anyway, giving the team another valuable member.

As the club slowly grows, their activities begin attracting attention across the school. Students gather to watch their energetic practices, proving that the dream of restoring the dodgeball club is finally becoming reality. However, not everyone welcomes its return. The principal secretly meets Honey Otohana inside her laboratory and asks for help stopping the club before it grows any larger. Honey accepts the assignment and plans to gather evidence by secretly observing the members with miniature bee-shaped surveillance drones.

Honey's first spying attempt immediately goes wrong. While the club members are relaxing during a break, the drones fly too close and are mistaken for dangerous insects. Danko quickly knocks them out of the sky with pinpoint throws, forcing Honey to abandon remote surveillance. Frustrated but unwilling to give up, she decides to approach the club personally while pretending to be a shy student interested in joining.

When Honey nervously introduces herself, she struggles to speak with students and almost leaves before saying anything. Danko and the others warmly welcome her, offer snacks, and immediately treat her like a friend. Honey secretly congratulates herself for fooling everyone, but before she can continue her investigation, Danko announces that every new member must complete the club's entrance test. This time the challenge involves balancing high above the ground while exchanging throws, making Honey visibly nervous because she dislikes both heights and physical activity.

The test becomes even more dangerous when Honey secretly activates one of her hidden bee drones. Danko is reminded once again of her father's words about always giving her absolute best. Despite repeated warnings from her teammates to hold back, she throws with full strength. Honey successfully catches the ball, astonishing everyone. When it is her turn to throw, she reveals an unexpected trick. Using advanced visual effects, she creates a glowing ghost-like illusion around the ball, hoping fear alone will defeat Danko. The bizarre attack completely terrifies Danko, who repeatedly insists she is afraid of ghosts, yet she refuses to run away because reviving her father's dodgeball club matters too much to her.

Summoning every ounce of courage, Danko finally catches the frightening ball, only to discover that the ghost was nothing more than a harmless projection. Honey apologizes and admits she created the illusion simply to scare her. Instead of becoming angry, Danko excitedly praises Honey's unique "magic ball" and happily declares that she has passed the entrance exam. The other members enthusiastically welcome Honey into the club, completely unaware that she originally came to shut them down.

Honey is deeply affected by the kindness she receives. She quietly reflects that she has always watched other people build friendships through her drones while remaining alone herself. Being accepted so naturally into the dodgeball club gives her something she has never experienced before. She sincerely thanks everyone, while the principal and her allies suspect Honey has abandoned her original mission.

The episode ends with... Danko visiting her father's grave once again. Looking ahead with excitement, she says it will not be long before she finally meets her destined rival. Filled with confidence after successfully recruiting several talented teammates, she eagerly looks forward to the next challenge awaiting both her and the newly revived dodgeball club.
